An exceptional terroir

Savennières is one of the oldest and most demanding appellations in the Loire Valley.

Vines have been cultivated there since Gallo-Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological discoveries of wine presses and wine vessels. From the 17th century onwards, Savennières wines were exported throughout Europe and served in the most prestigious European royal courts.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the famous "prince of gastronomes" Curnonsky placed a Savennières among the five greatest wines in the world.

This unique terroir is based on a rare balance: schist and volcanic rock soils, a specific microclimate and a demanding grape variety, Chenin, capable of producing wines that are powerful, fine and exceptionally long-lasting.

Our vineyard, whose history dates back to 1495, is located in Anjou on the banks of the Loire, nestled in one of the exceptional terroirs of the prestigious Savennières appellation. It extends over 14 hectares of hillsides and hedged fields, with its branch of the Loire (the Boire).

At the heart of this Angevin landscape lies the Château des Vaults, in the classical style of the 17th century, surrounded by its landscaped agricultural park with its meadows, its centuries-old trees and its old vegetable garden.

Savennières, a major Loire Valley terroir

The Savennières from Domaine du Closel stands out as a major reference among great French white wines.

Regularly praised by French and international critics , its wines are distinguished by major reference guides: Wine Spectator, Guide Hachette , RVF , Bettane & Desseauve .

Certified in organic farming and committed to biodynamics (Biodyvin), Domaine du Closel cultivates the Chenin grape variety on the schist slopes of Savennières , a rare and confidential appellation.

Hand-harvested grapes , very low yields and complex terroirs give rise to age-worthy white wines of singular depth and elegance.
